Who Wants To Know The Will Of God?

Writer's picture: Dwight SmithDwight Smith

Who wants to know the will of God? We can, and we can be assured that it is His will.

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:1-2

Responding to the thoughts contained in the previous chapters, especially

Romans 11:33-36, Paul calls us to action.  That action is the very essence of worship, and, ends in daily understanding the will of God.

Worship is the act of offering our bodies as living sacrifices to all that God still wants to accomplish in the world. Because He has designed it so, whenever we submit our bodies to His designs and desired actions, we are confirming His holiness in us, and pleasing Him.

The mind understands this, because we fill it with the knowledge of His word, the Bible. Our hearts are encouraged because the Holy Spirit uses this knowledge to give us courage and encouragement. Our wills respond to the knowledge, the encouragement and the Holy Spirit by giving ourselves over to God’s use. And, He is pleased!

This leads us into a pathway of interaction with the Spirit through the word, that rejects the call of the fallen world and confidently draws us into a transformation of the mind that we inherited from Adam and Eve.

We cooperate by submission and daily time in God’s word. Because the word of God is God breathed, it is alive and active in us. The Spirit uses the word and our submissive spirit to it, to begin to undue the corruption of our minds and build the life of Jesus in us.

“We are to continue in His Word so thoroughly that our prayers will be in synchronization with His will (John 15:7) and our behavior will be in synchronization with His commandments (1 John 3:24).” (ICR October 6, 2023)

By this process of listening to the word and the Spirit we can confidently test the many opportunities that come our way, and then know that we are walking in the will of God. This pathway is always something that is good, acceptable and perfect.

It is good because it results in blessing others and honoring our Father in heaven. It is acceptable because God accepts it. It is perfect because it leads us into actions and results that lead to the ends for which God created this world and, sent His Son for our redemption.

The Christian’s world is always dominated by what pleases our Heavenly Father, in thought, word and action. It takes a lifetime of learning and discipline. But it will incrementally align our lives with the will that should most preoccupy us: our Father’s will!
