“We have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;" Colossians 1:9-10

“What is here said to the Colossians, let all believers take as said to themselves, and draw from this a common exhortation that we must always make progress in the doctrine of piety until death.” (Commentary on Colossians John Calvin)

The very nature of being born again by God in Jesus Christ through the work of the Holy Spirit is for continual growth in righteousness. Salvation is for eternity. But eternity for the one who follows Jesus begins flowering in us once we have been born anew.

We cannot stand still in our confessed faith. We cannot because the seed of God has been placed within us by the Holy Spirit. (1 John 1:9). The Holy Spirit will grow that faith. We water it by our disciplined time with God in His word. But, the Holy Spirit grows it.

This is why Calvin can say that, “we must always make progress in the doctrine of piety until death.”

Don’t allow yourself to stand still!
