Remember Your Leaders

“Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:7-8

There is no greater admonition than this. We have too many moving pieces in our society, most brought to us by the constant  “presence” of electronic devices. So many voices saying so many things, almost none of them able to be checked as to their presuppositions.

The danger cannot be of overstated. Daily joy and freedom that come from knowing that we have been redeemed and set free in the resurrection of Jesus, are too often under assault. The words of Hebrews are needed today….everyday.

Consider and (only then) imitate. I am struck with both the order of the words and the emphasis.

First, consider the outcome of their life, and its choices we could say. Such consideration does not come from a causal look. But, from a continued gazing at where their life is centered and the little and large outcomes of the journey they have walked. Obviously, the greatest consideration comes from observing the life long outcomes of those who have died.

Outcomes are the incarnation of presumptions, convictions and choices. The outcomes are most evident in times of testing, difficulty, suffering and persecution. What one believes is most on display in these times.

Second, we are not admonished to follow their life, nor even the particular choices that they made. But, we are to follow the faith that generated those outcomes. That faith is centered upon the One who never changes. He was, is and eternally is, the Son, Savior, provider, sustainer, protector…..

This is the observable presupposition, the foundation upon which the choices of the faithful leaders are evident and we are to consider. This consideration and imitation allows our faith to be matured, and imitated.

Not all of who presume to lead us are to be followed. Those who have not allowed the Holy Spirit to mature their faith will ultimately demonstrate their presuppositions and foundations by their choices. Reject these!!

We have been infiltrated by too many such leaders in todays church….. Consider and be careful who you follow.
